1. 01Should I Take a Gap Year?

   Good evening, everyone. I'm about to graduate from university in Toronto, and I have a job offer that starts next spring. But part of me wants to take a gap year first. Tonight, I'd like to think through the pros and cons out loud.

   Buenas noches a todos. Estoy a punto de graduarme de la universidad en Toronto, y tengo una oferta de trabajo que empieza la próxima primavera. Pero una parte de mí quiere tomarse primero un año sabático. Esta noche quiero pensar en voz alta los pros y los contras.

2. 02What I Would Do

   If I took a gap year, I'd work on a farm in New Zealand for a few months, volunteer somewhere in South America, and finally learn Spanish properly.

   Si me tomara un año sabático, trabajaría unos meses en una granja en Nueva Zelanda, haría voluntariado en algún lugar de Sudamérica y, por fin, aprendería español como se debe.

3. 03Pro: Experiences I Can't Get Later

   The strongest argument for a gap year is timing. Right now, I have no mortgage, no children, and no manager. Once I start working, taking a whole year off becomes much harder.

   El argumento más fuerte a favor de un año sabático es el momento. Ahora mismo no tengo hipoteca, ni hijos, ni jefe. Cuando empiece a trabajar, tomarme un año entero libre será mucho más difícil.

4. 04Pro: Knowing Myself Better

   A gap year could also help me understand myself. Living in unfamiliar places might show me what I really value, and I might come back with clearer goals for my career.

   Un año sabático también podría ayudarme a entenderme mejor. Vivir en lugares desconocidos podría mostrarme lo que de verdad valoro, y podría volver con metas más claras para mi carrera.

5. 05Con: Money and Momentum

   On the other hand, there are real costs. I'd spend my savings instead of earning a salary, and while my friends gain a year of work experience, I'd be starting later.

   Por otro lado, hay costos reales. Gastaría mis ahorros en lugar de ganar un sueldo, y mientras mis amigos ganan un año de experiencia laboral, yo empezaría más tarde.

6. 06Con: The Job Might Not Wait

   The biggest risk is my job offer. I asked the company whether they could delay my start date, but they couldn't promise anything. If I leave, the offer might not be there when I return.

7. 07My Decision: A Gap Summer

   So here's what I've decided: a gap summer instead of a gap year. I'll spend three months on the farm and studying Spanish, then start my job in the fall. It's a compromise, but it keeps the most important parts of both options.

   In the end, I realized that big decisions don't always have to be all or nothing. If you're facing a similar choice, look for the middle path. Thank you.
