   Hi, everyone. I'm a taxi driver in Bangkok, and I use a map app every day. One day, I wondered: how does it know the fastest way? Today, I'll explain the basic idea in simple words.

   皆さん、こんにちは。私はバンコクのタクシー運転手で、毎日地図アプリを使っています。ある日、ふと思いました。アプリは、どうやって一番速い道が分かるのだろう？今日は、その基本的な考え方を、やさしい言葉で説明します。

2. 02Step 1: Knowing Where You Are

   First, the app needs to know where you are. Your phone gets signals from satellites, and it can also use nearby Wi-Fi and cell towers to find your position.

   まず、アプリはあなたがどこにいるかを知る必要があります。スマホは人工衛星から信号を受け取りますし、近くのWi-Fiや携帯電話の基地局を使って位置を調べることもできます。

3. 03Step 2: Roads as a Network

   Second, the app sees the city like a giant net. Every corner is a point, and every road between them is a line. Each line has a cost: how long it takes to travel.

   二つ目に、アプリは街を巨大な網のように見ています。交差点の一つ一つが点で、その間の道の一つ一つが線です。どの線にもコスト、つまり通るのにかかる時間があります。

   Third, the app searches for the path with the lowest total time. It doesn't try every road in the city. Instead, it uses smart shortcuts to focus on roads that lead toward your goal.

   三つ目に、アプリは合計の時間が一番短い道を探します。街のすべての道を試すわけではありません。代わりに、賢い近道の工夫を使って、目的地に向かう道に絞って探します。

5. 05Step 4: Watching the Traffic

   Finally, the app watches traffic. If a road is crowded, that line becomes more expensive, so the app may choose a different route, even while you're driving.

   最後に、アプリは交通の状況を見ています。ある道が混んでいると、その線のコストが高くなるので、運転している途中でも、アプリは別のルートを選ぶことがあります。

6. 06Why It's Sometimes Wrong

   Of course, it's not perfect. A sudden accident or a closed street can surprise it. As a taxi driver, I sometimes know a better way, because I know my city.

   もちろん、完璧ではありません。急な事故や通行止めの道には、不意をつかれることがあります。タクシー運転手の私は、自分の街をよく知っているので、もっといい道が分かることもあります。
