01What Happened When Finland Tested a Basic Income?
Good evening, everyone. Imagine receiving a fixed amount of money every month from the government, with no conditions. It sounds like a dream, or maybe a bad idea. Finland actually tested it. Today, I'll explain the idea and what happened.
02What Is a Basic Income?
A basic income is a regular payment that people receive without conditions. Unlike some unemployment benefits, people can keep it even if they find a job.
03The Finnish Experiment
From 2017 to 2018, Finland ran an experiment. Two thousand unemployed people, aged twenty-five to fifty-eight, received five hundred sixty euros every month, with no conditions. Their results were compared with a control group that didn't receive it.

04Result 1: Small Effect on Jobs
So, did people work more? The effect on employment was small. The people who received the basic income worked slightly more days than the control group, but the difference was modest.

05Result 2: Better Wellbeing
The bigger difference was wellbeing. Recipients said they were more satisfied with their lives and felt less mental strain, sadness, and loneliness. They also felt more secure about their finances.

06What It Doesn't Prove
But we should be careful. The experiment included only unemployed people, lasted only two years, and was not a full national program paid for by taxes. So it can't tell us exactly what would happen if a whole country adopted basic income.
07Why It Still Matters
Still, it matters. Instead of only arguing about theory, Finland collected real data. Its results raise an important question: should we judge social policy only by jobs, or also by how people feel?
08Conclusion
To sum up, Finland's experiment showed small effects on employment but clear improvements in wellbeing. It didn't settle the debate, but it gave us real evidence to discuss. Thank you.
