Encourage voting, don't force it

01Why Voting Should Stay a Free Choice
Good afternoon, everyone. Some people believe that voting should be compulsory. I agree that more people should vote, but today I'll argue that forcing them is the wrong way to get there.
02What Compulsory Voting Means
Let's be clear about what we're discussing. Under compulsory voting, adults are required by law to take part in elections, and people who don't can be fined. Countries like Belgium and Australia use this system.

03Reason 1: Freedom Includes Not Voting
My first reason is freedom. In a free society, choosing not to take part can also be a political message. It can say, "None of these options represent me."
04Reason 2: Uninformed Votes
My second reason is quality. If people vote only to avoid a fine, some may choose randomly, without learning about the candidates. A vote like that doesn't make democracy stronger.
05Reason 3: It Hides the Real Problem
My third reason is that forcing people to vote hides the real problem. People skip elections because they don't trust politicians, they don't have time, or voting is difficult. A fine doesn't fix any of that.
06Admittedly, Turnout Matters
Admittedly, supporters have a point. When only some groups vote, their voices become louder than others. I take that concern seriously. I just think there's a better solution.
07A Better Way: Make Voting Easier
Instead of forcing people, we should make voting easier and more attractive. For example, we could hold elections on weekends, teach voting in schools, and make postal voting simple.
08Conclusion
To conclude, a healthy democracy should invite people to vote, not force them. Let's remove the barriers, and trust citizens to make their own choice. Thank you.
