01Nearly 7 Million Students Study Abroad
Good afternoon, everyone. I'm a graduate student from Indonesia, studying in the Netherlands. In my program, there are students from more than twenty countries. Today, I'll look at how many students study abroad, and why.
02The Big Number
According to data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, about six point nine million students were studying at university level outside their home country in 2022. In 2000, the number was about two point one million. That's more than three times as many.

03Where They Go
Where do they go? In 2022, Europe and North America hosted about four million international students, more than half of the world's total.

04Why Students Go Abroad
Why do students go abroad? For me and many of my classmates, the reasons were programs we couldn't find at home, studying in English, and preparing for international careers.
05The Benefits
The benefits go beyond the degree. Living abroad improved my English, made me more independent, and gave me friends around the world who see problems from different angles.
06The Challenges
But there are real challenges. Tuition and living costs can be very high, homesickness is common, and studying abroad is still not possible for many students who can't afford it.
07Making It Fairer
How could more students benefit? Scholarships help, but so do shorter options, like one-semester exchanges, and online classes that connect students from different countries.
08Conclusion
To conclude, the number of students studying abroad has more than tripled since 2000. The challenge now is to make these experiences possible for more students, not just those who can pay. Thank you.
