1. 01Our Street Was Too Dark at Night

   Hello, everyone. I live on a small street in Cape Town. Last winter, many people said they felt unsafe walking home at night. Today, I'll explain how our neighbors solved this problem together.

   Hola a todos. Vivo en una calle pequeña de Ciudad del Cabo. El invierno pasado, mucha gente decía que no se sentía segura al volver a casa caminando de noche. Hoy les voy a explicar cómo nuestros vecinos resolvieron este problema juntos.

2. 02The Problem

   The problem was simple but serious. Two streetlights were broken, and one corner was completely dark. Many older people stopped going out after sunset.

   El problema era sencillo, pero serio. Dos farolas estaban rotas y una esquina estaba completamente a oscuras. Muchas personas mayores dejaron de salir después del atardecer.

3. 03Step 1: We Talked

   First, we organized a meeting in my neighbor's garden. About twenty people came, and everyone shared their worries and ideas.

   Primero, organizamos una reunión en el jardín de mi vecino. Vinieron unas veinte personas y todos compartieron sus preocupaciones e ideas.

4. 04Step 2: We Contacted the City

   Next, we wrote a letter to the city with photos of the broken lights. Thirty families signed it. Two weeks later, the city repaired both lights.

   Después, escribimos una carta al ayuntamiento con fotos de las farolas rotas. Treinta familias la firmaron. Dos semanas más tarde, el ayuntamiento reparó las dos farolas.

5. 05Step 3: Lights at Home

   We also took action ourselves. Families agreed to keep their porch lights on in the evening, and we bought solar lights for the dark corner with money we collected together.

6. 06The Result

   The result was more than a brighter street. Older neighbors started walking in the evening again, and we got to know each other much better.

   In conclusion, we didn't need a big budget. We needed a meeting, a letter, and some lights. If there's a problem on your street, try talking to your neighbors first. Thank you.
