  1. 01Should Schools Ban Phones in Class?

Good morning, everyone. I'm a high school teacher in Madrid, and every year our staff room has the same debate: should phones be banned in class? Today, I'll present both sides fairly before sharing my own view.

  2. 02A Global Trend

This isn't just a local issue. According to UNESCO's 2023 Global Education Monitoring Report, about one in four countries had already banned smartphones in schools through a law or policy.

  3. 03The Case for a Ban

Supporters of a ban say phones are a constant distraction. Even when a phone is silent, students keep thinking about it. A ban also gives students a break from social media during the school day.

  4. 04The Case Against a Ban

On the other side, critics argue that phones can be powerful learning tools, for looking up words or recording experiments. They also say that school is the right place to learn how to use technology responsibly.

  5. 05What About Safety?

Parents often raise another point: safety. They want to reach their children in an emergency. However, most bans simply keep phones in bags or lockers, so students still have them before and after class.

  6. 06Weighing Both Sides

When we weigh both sides, the real disagreement is not about phones themselves. It's about whether schools should remove temptation, or teach students to manage it.

  7. 07My View: Away by Default

My own view is a middle path: phones away by default. They stay in bags, and they come out only when the teacher decides they're useful for a lesson. This keeps the focus, but still teaches responsible use.

  8. 08Conclusion

To sum up, the question isn't simply phones or no phones. It's about when and how they are used. With clear rules, we can protect students' attention and still prepare them for a digital world. Thank you.

Gracias.
