  1. 01Onsen vs. Sento

Hello, everyone. Visitors to Japan often ask me, "What's the difference between an onsen and a sento?" Both are big shared baths, but they're quite different. Let me compare them.

  2. 02The Water

The main difference is the water. An onsen uses natural hot spring water from under the ground. A sento, on the other hand, is a public bath that usually uses heated tap water.

  3. 03Where You Find Them

They're also in different places. Onsen are often in the mountains or in resort towns, so people travel to visit them. Sento are in ordinary city neighborhoods, and locals may visit them after work.

  4. 04The Experience

Because of that, the experience feels different. A trip to an onsen is a special, relaxing getaway, often with a nice dinner and an overnight stay. A sento visit is quick, cheap, and part of everyday life.

  5. 05Side by Side

Here they are side by side. Both have the same basic manners, though: wash your body before you get in, and don't put your towel in the water.

  6. 06Which One Should You Try?

So which should you try? If you're short on time in a big city, visit a sento to see local life. If you want to relax and see beautiful nature, plan a night at an onsen.

  7. 07Conclusion

In the end, they're both wonderful parts of Japanese culture. If you can, try both, and you'll understand why Japanese people love bathing so much. Thank you.
