A Community Fridge to Share Extra Food

A proposal to the neighborhood association

Good evening, everyone. Every week, shops and families in our area throw away food that is still good to eat, while some neighbors struggle to buy groceries. Tonight, I'd like to propose a simple way to connect the two: a community fridge.

  1. 01A Community Fridge to Share Extra Food

Good evening, everyone. Every week, shops and families in our area throw away food that is still good to eat, while some neighbors struggle to buy groceries. Tonight, I'd like to propose a simple way to connect the two: a community fridge.

  2. 02What Is a Community Fridge?

A community fridge is a shared fridge in a public place. Anyone can leave extra food, and anyone can take what they need, with no questions asked.

  3. 03It Works Elsewhere

This idea already works in other countries. In the UK, for example, the charity Hubbub supports a network of more than seven hundred community fridges, run by local groups.

  4. 04The Plan

Here's the plan. We place one fridge at the entrance of the community center, so it's open whenever the center is open. A team of volunteers would check it every day.

  5. 05Keeping It Safe

The biggest concern is food safety, and it's an important one. We would post clear rules about what can be shared, ask donors to label food with dates, and have volunteers remove anything that's no longer safe.

  6. 06"Won't People Take Too Much?"

Some people worry that a few people might take everything. In my view, the risk is worth it. A simple sign saying "Take what you need, leave what you can" encourages fairness, and the main goal is that good food doesn't go to waste.

  7. 07What We Need

To start, we need three things: a fridge, which a local shop has already offered to donate; about ten volunteers; and permission to use the space at the community center.

  8. 08Conclusion

To conclude, a community fridge is simple, low-cost, and good for both people and the planet. If you'd like to volunteer, please talk to me after the meeting. Thank you.
