01How My Family Prepares for an Earthquake
Hello, everyone. I live in Shizuoka, Japan, where earthquake drills are part of school life. My family takes preparation seriously. Today, I'll explain the steps we take.
02Step 1: Store Water and Food
First, we store water and food. The Japanese government suggests about three liters of drinking water per person per day for at least three days, and about a week's supply for a large disaster. For our family of four, that's at least thirty-six liters.

03Step 2: Secure Furniture
Next, we make our home safer. We fixed our tall bookshelves to the wall, and we keep heavy things on low shelves so they can't fall on anyone.
04Step 3: Pack an Emergency Bag
Then, each of us has an emergency bag near the door. Inside, there's a flashlight, a phone charger, medicine, some snacks, and copies of important documents.
05Step 4: Make a Family Plan
After that, we made a family plan. We decided where to meet if we're separated, and how to contact each other if phone lines are busy.
06Step 5: Check Twice a Year
Finally, we check everything twice a year. We replace old water and food, and we practice our plan, so everyone remembers what to do.
07Conclusion
In conclusion, we can't stop earthquakes, but we can prepare for them. Start with one step this week, like storing water. Thank you.
