  1. 01Too Many Tourists?

Good afternoon, everyone. We all have dream places we want to visit. But what happens when everyone wants to visit the same places at the same time? Today, I'll talk about overtourism and how cities are dealing with it.

  2. 02What Is Overtourism?

Overtourism happens when a place receives more visitors than it can handle. The streets become crowded, and daily life gets harder for the people who live there.

  3. 03The Effects on Locals

The effects are real. Locals can't get on crowded buses, rents go up as apartments become holiday rentals, and neighborhoods suffer from noise and trash.

  4. 04Why It's Happening

Why is this happening? Cheap flights make travel easier, social media sends everyone to the same photo spots, and large cruise ships can bring thousands of visitors to a small town in one day.

  5. 05Venice: A Fee for Day Visitors

Some cities are taking action. In 2024, Venice started charging day visitors an entry fee on its busiest days. The goal is to spread visitors across the year.

  6. 06Kyoto: Protecting Quiet Streets

In Kyoto, local residents in the Gion area had problems with tourists following geisha and entering private streets. In 2024, they decided to close some private lanes to tourists.

  7. 07What Travelers Can Do

Cities can't solve this alone. As travelers, we can visit in the off-season, choose lesser-known places nearby, and respect local rules and people.

  8. 08Conclusion

In conclusion, tourism brings money and joy, but too much of it can hurt the places we love. Next time you travel, try to be a guest, not just a tourist. Thank you.
