Good afternoon. I'm a high school history teacher in Dublin, and I spend every day with sixteen-year-olds. I have huge respect for them. Even so, I'll argue today that the voting age should stay at eighteen.

  1. 01Why the Voting Age Should Stay at 18

Good afternoon. I'm a high school history teacher in Dublin, and I spend every day with sixteen-year-olds. I have huge respect for them. Even so, I'll argue today that the voting age should stay at eighteen.

  2. 02Where I Agree

Let me start with where I agree. Many young people care deeply about politics. And some countries have tried a lower age. Austria, for example, lowered the voting age to sixteen for all elections in 2007.

  3. 03Reason 1: One Clear Age for Adulthood

My first reason is consistency. In many countries, eighteen is when you become a legal adult. Voting is one of the most important adult rights. I think it makes sense to keep it together with the others.

  4. 04Reason 2: Pressure From Home and School

Second, at sixteen, most people still live with their parents and spend all day at school. They may feel pressure to vote the way their parents or teachers expect, rather than forming their own views.

  5. 05Reason 3: Voting Isn't the Only Voice

Third, voting isn't the only way to have a voice. Young people can join youth councils, write to politicians, organize campaigns, and protest. Many already do, and they make a real difference.

  6. 06"Why Not Just Try It?"

Some people ask, "Why not just try it?" The problem is that once a voting age is lowered, it's almost impossible to raise it again. A change this big deserves very careful thought first.

  7. 07A Better Step

Instead, I'd suggest stronger civic education and mock elections in schools. That way, students practice voting, learn to compare parties, and arrive at eighteen ready to vote with confidence.

  8. 08Conclusion

In conclusion, young people's voices matter, but voting at eighteen keeps a clear line for adulthood. Let's prepare them well, rather than rushing them. Thank you.
