  1. 01Should Hotels Stop Giving Out Tiny Bottles?

Good afternoon. I'm a hotel manager in San Diego. For decades, hotels have given guests tiny plastic bottles of shampoo and lotion. Some people love them. Others see them as pure waste. Today, let's look at both sides.

Buenas tardes. Hoy, veamos ambos lados.

  2. 02What California Decided

In California, the decision has already been made. A law signed in 2019 stopped hotels from offering small plastic bottles of personal care products. Hotels with more than fifty rooms had to stop in 2023, and smaller hotels in 2024.

  3. 03For: Less Plastic Waste

Supporters point out the waste. Many guests use a little shampoo and leave the rest. Housekeepers then throw away half-used bottles every day, in every room.

  4. 04For: A Visible Signal

Supporters also say it sends a visible message. When guests see refillable dispensers, they're reminded that small daily choices matter, even on vacation.

  5. 05Against: Hygiene Worries

On the other hand, some guests worry about hygiene. They wonder whether a wall dispenser has been cleaned or tampered with. A sealed bottle feels safer to them.

  6. 06Against: A Small Part of the Problem

Critics also say that tiny bottles are a small part of a hotel's environmental impact. Energy, water use, and daily laundry have a much bigger effect. Focusing on bottles may distract from bigger changes.

  7. 07My View

In my hotel, we switched to large, sealed dispensers, and most guests adjusted quickly. I think the change is worth it. But I agree with critics on one point: it should be the first step, not the last.

  8. 08Conclusion

To conclude, banning tiny bottles is a small, sensible step. The real test is whether hotels go further, with energy, water, and laundry. Thank you.

Gracias.
