Should High School Students Have Part-Time Jobs? My Experience

1. 01A Part-Time Job in High School

   Hello, everyone. I'm seventeen, and I go to high school in Auckland. For the past year, I've worked at a fast-food restaurant on weekends. Today, I'll share the pros and cons of having a job while you're still in school.

   皆さん、こんにちは。私は17歳で、オークランドの高校に通っています。この1年、週末にファストフード店で働いてきました。今日は、学生のうちに仕事をすることの良い点と悪い点を紹介します。

2. 02Pro: My Own Money

   The most obvious advantage is money. I don't need to ask my parents for money anymore, and I've learned to budget. When you earn it yourself, you think twice before spending.

   一番分かりやすい良い点は、お金です。もう両親にお金をもらう必要はありませんし、お金のやりくりも覚えました。自分で稼ぐと、使う前によく考えるようになります。

3. 03Pro: Real-World Skills

   I've also learned skills that school doesn't teach. I talk to customers, even angry ones. I work in a team under pressure. I'm much more confident than I was a year ago.

   学校では教えてくれないスキルも身につきました。お客さんと話しますし、怒っている人とも話します。忙しい中で、チームで働きます。1年前よりずっと自信がつきました。

4. 04Con: Less Time to Study

   However, there are real costs. After an eight-hour shift, I'm too tired to study. Sometimes I rush my homework on Sunday night, and my grades in math have dropped a little.

   でも、本当のデメリットもあります。8時間のシフトのあとは、疲れて勉強できません。日曜の夜に慌てて宿題をすることもあり、数学の成績も少し下がりました。

5. 05Con: Missing Out

   Another disadvantage is missing out. My friends go to the beach or parties on weekends, and I'm often at work. I also have less time just to rest.

   もう一つのデメリットは、楽しいことを逃してしまうことです。友達は週末にビーチやパーティーに行きますが、私はたいてい仕事です。ただ休むための時間も少なくなります。

6. 06My Advice

   My advice is to limit your hours. I now work only one day a week, and I ask for time off before exams. Most bosses understand if you ask early.

   私のアドバイスは、働く時間を限ることです。今は週に1日だけ働いていて、テストの前には休みをお願いしています。早めに言えば、たいていの店長は分かってくれます。

   In conclusion, a part-time job can teach you a lot, but school should come first. With sensible limits, you can have both. Thank you.
