01Should Work Emails Stop After Hours?
Good afternoon. I'm an HR manager at a software company in Berlin. Last month, a new employee asked me, "Do I have to answer messages at night?" It's a simple question with a complicated answer. Today, let's look at France's approach and both sides of the debate.
02What France Did
France introduced a "right to disconnect" in a labor law passed in August 2016. From January 1, 2017, companies with fifty or more employees had to negotiate rules with their staff about using digital tools outside working hours.

03What It Is, and Isn't
It's important to be accurate. The law doesn't ban emails at night. It requires companies to agree on rules, or, if no agreement is reached, the employer must write a policy, including training on reasonable use of digital tools.

04For: Protecting Rest and Family Time
Supporters say clear rules protect rest and family life. Without them, many workers feel they must always be available, and the workday never really ends. A rule takes that pressure off individuals.
05Against: Flexibility and Global Teams
On the other hand, critics point out that work has changed. Teams work across time zones, and some people prefer to finish early and check messages later in the evening. Strict rules may take away that flexibility.
06Against: Culture Matters More Than Rules
Critics also argue that a policy on paper doesn't change culture by itself. If managers still reward people who reply at midnight, employees will keep replying, whatever the rules say.
07My View
In my view, the best part of France's approach is that it forces a conversation. At our company, we agreed that nobody is expected to reply after seven p.m., and managers schedule late emails to send the next morning.
08Conclusion
To conclude, a right to disconnect is a useful start, but rules only work when leaders follow them too. So, to answer my new employee's question: no, you don't have to answer at night. Thank you.
