  1. 01Try One Day Without Your Phone

Good evening. I'm a travel photographer from Cape Town, so I know how strange this may sound. My recommendation is simple: on your next trip, spend one full day without your phone.

  2. 02The Problem: Traveling Through a Screen

Think about how we travel now. We follow a map on the screen, check reviews before every meal, and photograph everything. We arrive in amazing places, but our eyes are often on our phones, not on the place itself.

  3. 03Benefit 1: You Really See the Place

On my first phone-free day, in Lisbon, I noticed things I would have missed: the sound of a tram, the smell of grilled sardines, an old man feeding pigeons. Without a camera in my hand, I was simply there.

  4. 04Benefit 2: Getting Lost, in a Good Way

Without a map app, you'll get a little lost. That sounds bad, but it's often the best part. You'll find streets that aren't on any top-ten list, and you'll have to ask people for directions, which often leads to real conversations.

  5. 05Benefit 3: Memories That Last

Finally, I remember my phone-free days better than any other days of my trips. When you can't take a photo, you look longer and pay more attention, and the memory stays with you.

  6. 06"But What If Something Goes Wrong?"

You might be thinking, "But what if something goes wrong?" That's a fair concern. So, be practical. Carry a paper map, write down your hotel's address, and keep your phone switched off in your bag for emergencies.

  7. 07How to Start

If a full day feels too much, start with half a day. Choose a safe, walkable neighborhood, tell your travel partner your plan, and just walk.

  8. 08Conclusion

To conclude, your phone helps you travel, but sometimes it stops you from really being there. Give yourself one day to see a place with your own eyes. I promise you'll remember it. Thank you.
